SUMMER DRIVES - A FRESH APPROACH

The results of our on-line survey earlier in 2010 showed that a number of group members complained that the Summer Drives were a pointless waste of time and fuel.   So this year, our Summer Drive meetings so far have been focussed on the IAM 'Planned System of Driving', the IPSGA System - Information,  Position, Speed, Gear and Acceleration.

Driving parties have been grouped from the associates and observers and other members attending.  The Summer Drives have lasted about 45 minutes and on return to Platform One, there has been an informal de-briefing session and an opportunity to discuss what points came up during the drive.

On 12th May at our first Summer Drive meeting, Dave Folland gave an overall view and interesting introduction to the IPSGA System.

On 9th June, Anthony Darling set the drivers and observers a challenging fixed course around Barnstaple giving everyone an opportunity to practise the IPSGA System.

The drive was two loops each based around our Platform One meeting point and drivers headed out alternately in a clockwise and then anti-clockwise direction.  Avoiding a convoy was the main reason, but it gave them all something to look out for and someone to wave at! We had only one car get a bit lost, but because it was all on familiar territory, they quickly got back on track with a creative bit of re-routing.

Basically first (or last if you chose the other way round), it took drivers out along the Braunton road and up through the narrow roads above Pilton to the North Devon Hospital, then down past the Fire Station and back through the town inner by-pass and towards Tesco, turning right at Western Power into Hollowtree Road. Then up through Newport and over the crossroads to the A39 and along to Roundswell and Cedars roundabout. Finally back over the Taw bridge past the Police Station to Platform One.

To add interest there was a group of school children along the route who were speed gunning motorists with the help of the Police. No one was stopped I am pleased to report.

On 14th July, Barrie Styles looked more closely at SPEED

Which roads have less risk?

What are the risks at different speeds?

Speed limits are there for safety.

What are inappropriate and illegal speeds?
